Smooth Space initiated and produced this year-long residency project which was hosted by Torre Abbey in Torquay, Devon. Smooth Space artist Kate Paxman undertook the residency, arriving shortly after the abbey re-opened to the public following the second phase of an extensive Heritage Lottery funded restoration project.
Kate worked closely with abbey staff, and was given full access to the building and its extensive collections. During the 12 months, she held regular pop-up studio events in the abbey where she could meet visitors and discuss her progress. Kate held two final exhibitions of the work she developed during her residency in free and paid-entry areas across the Torre Abbey site.
The project also included Artists Conversations, a series of talks with nationally and internationally renowned practitioners, plus a residency-linked creative programme with Double Elephant Print Workshop engaging local young people and older adults.
